The Winnipeg Inline Hockey League is looking for a motivated, responsible, and professional individual to provide services as the WIHL Convenor.

WIHL Convenor Description

The WIHL Convenor is an independent contractor responsible for overseeing the smooth functioning of the Kid's and Adult Leagues of the WIHL.  The WIHL Convenor primarily serves as the central liaison between the WIHL board of directors, coaches, players, and parents.

Core Responsibilities

The WIHL Convenor will provide a range of services, from preseason organization to game-day management:

  • Team & Player Management: Facilitates the annual free agent player drafts and subsequent team balancing to ensure competitive play. They also support the coaches with player evaluations and manage player movement and affiliate player selections.
  • On-Site Game-Day Operations: From Monday to Friday, 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM, at the Bertrand Arena (294 Bertrand Street, Winnipeg, MB), ensures games start and end on time, verifies that referees and timekeepers are present, and manages on-site issues.
  • Rules & Compliance: Enforces league rules, policies, and safety protocols. This includes reporting major penalties, monitoring automatic suspensions, and ensuring coaches meet requirements.
  • Conflict Resolution: Acts as the first point of contact for disputes between parents, players, and team personnel. Apply "best practices" like the 24-Hour Rule to de-escalate high-emotion situations.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Maintains accurate game sheets (via HockeyShift) and reports statistics, incidents, or serious injuries to the league executive.

Typical Requirements & Qualifications

  • Certifications: WIHL requires a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) and certifications such as Respect in Sport or Speak Out. Standard First Aid and CPR-C are an asset.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Excel, and specialized electronic game sheet software.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong organization, time management, and conflict resolution capabilities.

Key Events Managed

  • Meetings: Leading pre-season and mid-season meetings to discuss draft allocations, security clearances, and playoff formats.  Regular reporting to the WIHL Board of Directors.
  • Special Events: Assisting with the coordination of league play, divisional tournaments, playoffs, and end-of-season celebrations.
  • Emergency Response: Preparedness to implement an Emergency Action Plan in the event of an injury, serving as the "Control Person" to manage the scene until medical help arrives.
  • Sport Court Floor Installations: Assisting with the coordination of the WIHL sport court floor, equipment, sound system, and logistics.
  • Maintenance: Utilizing, checking stock, and maintaining of all WIHL owned equipment (sport court floor sweeping / cleaning, floor washing machine, nets, pucks, goalie gear, skates, etc.).

Contract Details

  • Contract Term: April 6, 2026 - June 26, 2026
  • Service Rate: $25.00 per hour
  • Services to be invoiced bi-weekly. Services to be paid via e-transfer.
  • Independent contractor to file and pay applicable taxes and remittances.
